ALFREDO LANGARICA
Alfredo Langarica combines the highest level of painting ability with a multi layered artistic sensibility seasoned over a 25 year career and with an absolutely world class sense of humor. This artist in his forties from Guadalajara has painted in a wide variety of styles over the years, from highly realistic to totally abstract and with many styles in between. His work now is mostly figurative with various levels of an expressionistic approach, but often the line is crossed, as in semi-figurative or semi-abstract. Considering the uniqueness of some of these paintings, new terms like the “abstrafigurative” or “figurastractive” could apply. However, the nearly constant thread is Langarica´s active sense of humor. In the past, images of a drunken Santa in a Speedo with his gift wrapped presents scattered over the beach have hung next to an image of a giant Pre-Columbian Mona Lisa sitting Buddha like in front of throngs of tourists in an open plaza. Angels and prostitutes are also favorite subjects, the latter mostly distinguishable from the former by the presence of a cellular phone as well as the absence of wings, compared at least to those angels not yet designated as “fallen.” Musicians are another popular theme, but with Alfredo´s vision the scene is likely to portray a quartet becoming a trio, as the fourth member storms off angrily with a bottle of tequila in one hand and his guitar in the other.
However, this sense of humor doesn’t detract from the obvious fact that the paintings are beautifully executed by a talented artist with exceptional abilities. Apart from the frequent use of humor, these are beautiful works of art with a painterly flair. Langarica’s inclusion in several museum exhibitions and collections around Mexico reinforce this, as well as the fact he is one of the best known and most highly collected painters in Guadalajara, Mexico’s second largest city. Alfredo has also spent a couple of 2-3 year sojourns living in Puerto Vallarta, and one of his great, great uncles was an early mayor of PV, with a street in his name downtown, Calle Jesus Langarica. Before becoming a full time painter, Alfredo also worked as a designer and decorator of several restaurants and cocktail lounges in Guadalajara. Currently he’s building a new home on the edge of a deep canyon outside the city, where he’ll move with his wife and their young son, Santiago.
Alfredo Langarica combina el más alto nivel de capacidad pictorica con una multifascetica sensibilidad artística avalada por 25 años de carrera y con un sentido del humor absolutamente de clase mundial. Este artista de unos cuarenta y tantos años de Guadalajara ha pintado en una amplia variedad de estilos en los últimos años , desde hiperrealista hasta totalmente abstracto y con muchos estilos entre medio. Su trabajo ahora es principalmente figurativo con varios niveles de un enfoque expresionista, pero a menudo cruza la línea, como semi-figurativo o semi-abstracto. Teniendo en cuenta la singularidad de algunas de estas pinturas, nuevos términos como el “abstrafigurativo ” o “figurastractivo” se podrían aplicar . Sin embargo, la constante es el activo sentido del humor de Langarica. En pasadas exposiciones , una imagen de un Santa Claus borracho en un bañador con su regalos envueltos y dispersos en la playa se había colgado junto a una imagen de una gigante Mona Lisa de aspecto Pre-Colombino y sentada como un Buda enfrente de la multitud de turistas en una plaza . Los ángeles y las prostitutas también son sus temas favoritos , estas últimas sobre todo se distingue de los anteriores por la presencia de un teléfono celular, así como la ausencia de alas, comparadas al menos a los ángeles aún no designados como “caídos”. Los músicos son otro tema popular, pero con la visión de Alfredo es probable retratar la escena de un cuarteto a punto de convertirse en un trío, ya que el cuarto miembro se retira enojado con una botella de tequila en una mano y su guitarra en la otra.
De cualquier modo, este sentido del humor no quita el hecho evidente de que las pinturas están muy bien ejecutadas por un artista talentoso con habilidades excepcionales . Aparte del uso frecuente del humor, son hermosas obras de arte con un gran estilo pictórico. La inclusión de Langarica en varias exposiciones en museos y colecciones de todo México refuerzan esto, así como el hecho de que es uno de los pintores más conocidos y altamente reconocidos en Guadalajara, la segunda ciudad más grande de México. Alfredo también ha pasado un par de estancias de 2-3 años viviendo en Puerto Vallarta, y el hermano de su tatarabuelo fue alcalde de Puerto Vallarta, con una calle que ostenta su nombre, la calle Jesús Langarica . Antes de convertirse en un pintor de tiempo completo, Alfredo también trabajó como diseñador y decorador de varios restaurantes y bares en Guadalajara. Actualmente está construyendo una nueva casa en el borde de un profundo cañón fuera de la ciudad , donde planea vivir con su esposa y su pequeño hijo, Santiago .
