LUZ URDANETA

Born in Maracaibo, Venezuela and currently living in Querétaro, Mexico. She is the daughter of a professional couple, her mother was an educator, poetess and writer, and her father a civil engineer. She has 3 siblings: Claudia, Adriana and Alberto.

She began her primary studies in Maracaibo but, in 1965, her family moved to Caracas where she continued her education. In 1966 she began to study music at the Juan Manuel Olivares School, and at the same time she was part of the choir of the Modesta Bor School and the Creole choir directed by José Antonio Calcaño. At age ten she entered the Inter-American Ballet Academy, where she obtained a scholarship to study academic dance.

She finished her high school studies in 1977 and received a scholarship from the Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho Foundation to study contemporary dance at the London School of Contemporary Dance, graduating in 1980.

Returned to Venezuela after graduating, to join to various projects that her sister Adriana -also a dancer- had initiated along with dancers Julie Bransley and Jacques Broquet, The Latin American center of Dace (CLADA) and the company and school Danzahoy. Luz also is a teacher at the University of Arts UNEARTE and choreographer at the National Dance Company and the University Company of Arts.

Married to the Mexican painter and dancer Benjamín Hierro, with whom she shared stages on tours throughout different countries within the company and dance school Danzahoy. Both have worked together exhibiting their work in different artistic spaces in various countries, such as the United States, Uruguay, England, Venezuela, Israel as well as in different states of Mexico.

Through her paintings, Luz found her own language and means of expression, with the same fluidity, freshness and discipline as in contemporary dance. Her colorful works have a poetic and unique nuance, as well as poise and energy, as in the dance. An interesting amalgam between abstract and figurative.

 

Nacida en Maracaibo, Venezuela y actualmente viviendo en Querétaro, México. Es hija de una pareja de profesionales, su madre fue educadora, poeta y escritora, y su padre ingeniero civil. Tiene 3 hermanos: Claudia, Adriana y Alberto.

Inició sus estudios primarios en Maracaibo pero, en 1965, su familia se trasladó a Caracas donde continuó su educación. En 1966 comenzó a estudiar música en la Escuela Juan Manuel Olivares, y al mismo tiempo formó parte de la coral de la Escuela Modesta Bor y la coral Creole dirigida por José Antonio Calcaño. A los diez años ingresó a la Academia Interamericana de Ballet, donde obtuvo una beca para estudiar danza académica.

Finalizó sus estudios de bachillerato en 1977 y fue becada por la Fundación Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho para estudiar danza contemporánea en la London School of Contemporary Dance, graduándose en 1980.

Regresó a Venezuela, luego de su graduación, para unirse a varios proyectos que habían iniciado su hermana Adriana -también bailarina- junto a los bailarines Julie Bransley y Jacques Broquet: el Centro Latinoamericano de Danza CLADA, la compañía Danzahoy y la Escuela Danzahoy. Luz se desempeña como maestra de la Universidad de las Artes UNEARTE y como coreógrafa en la Compañía Nacional de Danza y en la Compañía Universitaria de las Artes.

Casada con el pintor y bailarín mexicano Benjamín Hierro, con quien compartió escenarios en giras por diferentes países dentro de la compañía y escuela de danza Danzahoy. Ambos han trabajado juntos exhibiendo su trabajo en diferentes espacios artísticos de varios países, como Estados Unidos, Uruguay, Inglaterra, Venezuela, Israel así como en diferentes estados de México.

Dentro de la pintura, Luz encontró su propio lenguaje y medio de expresión, con la misma fluidez, frescura y disciplina como en la Danza contemporánea. Sus coloridas obras tienen un matiz poético y singular, así como desenvolvimiento y energía, como en el baile. Un interesante puente entre lo abstracto y lo figurativo.
